Fairy Meadows, named by German Climbers (German Märchenwiese, “Fairytale Meadows” and locally known as Joot, is a grassland near one of the base campsites of Mount Nanga Parbat (an 8000r peak), located in Diamer District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. At an altitude of about 3,300 meters above sea level, it serves as the launching point for trekkers summiting on the Rakhiot Face of the Nanga Parbat. In 1995, the Government of Pakistan declared Fairy Meadows a National Park. Fairy Meadows is approachable by a twelve-kilometer-long jeep-able trek starting from Raikhot bridge on Karakoram Highway to the village Tattu. Further from Tato, it takes about three to four hours of hiking by a five-kilometer trek to Fairy Meadows. The grassland is located in the Rakhiot valley, at one end of the Rakhiot Glacier which originates from the Nanga Parbat and feeds a stream that finally falls in the River Indus. Since 1992, locals have operated camping sites in the area. The six-month tourist season at Fairy Meadows starts in April and continues until the end of September.
Deosai is the combination of two words ‘Deo’ (giant) and ‘Sai’ (shadow). For centuries, it is believed that this place is haunted by giants, thus the name ‘The Land of the Giants’ came into being. The weather is quite unpredictable here, sometimes it starts snowing in summer. Sunlight and clouds seem to play hide and seek here, with the sun shining one minute, and overcast in next. The Deosai National Park is renowned for its vast plains covered with lush wild grass, beautiful flowers, and numerous lakes. Sheosar Lake makes for an ideal picnic spot and local authorities offer camping facilities for tourists to spend a night under the stars next to the pristine waters. There is an abundance of wildlife such as brown bears, snow leopards, red foxes, the Himalayan ibex, golden eagles, vultures, and falcons.
Rama Meadows is located a few kilometers from Astore, a small enchanting city in Gilgit Baltistan. Rama Meadows is a peaceful spot in the wilderness. The main market of Astore leads you into Rama Village which further ends in a mystically tranquil plain known as Rama Meadows. Rama Meadows with green pastures, snow-capped mountains, lakes, and grazing cattle are as beautiful as a picture. From Rama Meadows, you can also have a look at the southern ridge of Nanga Parbat. After a hike of half an hour, you can make your way to Rama Lake. From the lake, you can see Nanga Parbat at the front all surrounded by forests.
